With key contributions from Jenna Williams, the Rutgers University gymnastics program made history with a school-record 195.975 team score to win a quad meet in its final home meet of the season at the Livingston Recreation Center. The Scarlet Knights also set program records on the vault (48.975) and the floor exercise (49.250). RU defeated Cornell (191.325), William & Mary (191.100) and Brockport (188.750). The team capped the home season with an average of 194.450 in four meets. “It’s pretty amazing, this is what we have been pushing for,” head coach Louis Levine said. “In all honesty, we can actually do better than what we did (that day). We have to keep striving to get better and better but I do not want to downplay this moment. We have built towards this all season, knowing we were capable of this type of performance.” The tone of the meet was set right away for the Scarlet Knights on the vault with a school-record 48.975 in the event, including a 9.800 from Williams. The prior high was 48.825 at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships in 2011. Moving on to uneven bars, RU put up a season-high 48.950 score – the third-best in Rutgers history. Williams notched a career-high 9.900 to post the highest mark in the meet. The Scarlet Knights had held an average of 48.508 in the event this season. The Scarlet Knights continued the momentum with a 48.800 on the balance beam as Williams followed in a tie for third at 9.750. The team score was the fourth-best in RU history and second-highest this season. Finishing strong on the floor exercise, all six Rutgers competitors scored at least a 9.775 to bring in a team record 49.250. RU brought the season average up to 48.831, the best of any event. The team score of 195.975 bested the previous record of 195.400 set Feb. 26, 2000 at home. The Bordentown High alumna has twice been named EAGL Rookie of the Week. “Jenna has been a really consistent performer on three events for us so far this season and obviously played a major role in our big score (that weekend),” Levine said after she received the honor in early February. “She has done a great job of staying within herself and repeating her routines over and over. Jenna has developed into someone we can count on.” Williams helped the Scarlet Knights to their then-third-highest score (195.000) in program history and best since 2000 in a quad meet victory. She continued her impressive rookie season with a pair of 9.825 scores on the uneven bars and the balance beam to go with a 9.725 on the vault. The beam mark netted her a tied-for-second finish, while placing tied for third on the bars. For the season, Williams has been a leader in the competitive EAGL on the uneven bars. “Leading the EAGL in bars as a freshman says a lot,” Levine said. “She has the ability to repeat the same routine consistently to the point where you see the same thing every day. That is impressive for anyone, forget just being a freshman.” Williams also earned the honor Jan. 8 after her collegiate debut at New Hampshire.

Sophomore hopes to lead Ursinus to top of Hill As the Ursinus College men’s golf team headed into the Spring 2013 season, sophomore Russell Hill of Bordentown was ranked first in the Centennial Conference. Hill averaged a 74 last fall, with a low score of 73. The Bordentown Regional High School alumnus competed in 11 matches during his freshman campaign at the college in Lancaster, Pa., and he shot a low of 74 at the Stonewall on April 17, 2012. Pulhac on pitching staff at Widener Peter Pulhac, who attended Mercer County Community College after he graduated from Bordentown High School, is a junior pitcher at Widener University.

In other news… The Rutgers University-Camden softball team had a two-week layoff in March before finally returning to action in the first game of its spring trip and Ashleigh Johnson and the rest of the Scarlet Raptors didn’t skip a beat. Johnson, a senior pitcher from Bordentown, tossed a three-hitter to power the Scarlet Raptors over Morrisville State College, 6-1, at the Snowbird Invitational. Johnson struck out seven, walked two and allowed only one unearned run in the second inning as she raised her record to 3-1. Junior pitcher Tommy Potts of Bordentown hurled seven strong innings striking out seven and allowing just one walk for his first win of the season as the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team defeated Penn State-Abington, 9-1, in a Mid-March non-conference baseball game at Campbell’s Field. Potts (1-1) scattered eight hits over his seven innings of work, and allowed one earned run.
