Bordentown to feature Independence Day weekend celebrations

Jul 01, 2014 05:39AM ● Published by Community News Service

Bordentown has plenty in store this year for residents looking for Independence Day weekend activities.

Kicking off the festivities is a performance Wednesday, July 2, at Bordentown Regional High School by the New Jersey National Guard Band.

The free performance by the 63rd Army Band is set to begin at 7 p.m. and last until 9. Though the concert is free, tickets are still required.

For more information, or to reserve tickets, call the township administration office at (609) 298-2800, ext. 2109.

Parking is free and handicap accessible.

On Friday, July 3, celebrate Independence Day with a band at the fireworks celebration, set to begin at 4:30 p.m. and last until dusk.

The second annual event, set to be held at Joseph Lawrence Park on Ward Avenue, will be put on by Bordentown City, Bordentown Township and the Foundation for Bordentown Traditions.

The Foundation is a nonprofit organization that formed with the goal of raising funds to bring back the annual fireworks display in Bordentown, which was discontinued several years ago due to budget cuts.

The Foundation succeeded in bringing back the fireworks in 2013, and this year will mark the second year the fireworks have returned to Bordentown. The evening festivities are set to include food vendors, free kids’ games, live music, free giveaways and fireworks at dusk.

A rain date is scheduled for July 5.

On the morning of Friday, July 4, the township is set to host its annual Fish Derby at Northern Community Park.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the event is scheduled to begin at 10 and end at noon. The event is free, and will run in rain or shine.

The presentation and stocking of the pond is provided by the N.J. State Fish and Wildlife.

Trophies will be awarded at noon for the “biggest fish caught,” and prizes will be pulled at the conclusion of the event.

Every child must be accompanied by an adult, and must have a rod, bait and fishing supplies. Derby participants must be between the ages of 2-13.
