Summer theater heating up
If you thought you knew the story of The Princess and The Pea, you may be in for a walloping surprise. Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that it may not have been the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? After watching this spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance, you may never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
Once Upon A Mattress is from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Getting To Know Collection, which includes some of Broadway’s best-loved musicals that have been specially adapted for young performers-abridged, with music transposed into keys appropriate for young voices.
This is the eighth year of the successful Bordentown Junior Theatre Company summer program, which has given hundreds of young actors the opportunity to perform musicals such as Once On This Island Jr., Beauty and the Beast Jr., Mulan Jr., Aladdin Jr., Honk Jr., The Little Mermaid Jr. and last summer’s acclaimed production of Annie Jr.
Performances of Once Upon A Mattress G2K will be held on Friday, July 17th at 7:30PM and Saturday, July 18th at 2:00PM at the Bordentown Performing Arts Center, located at 318 Ward Avenue in Bordentown. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and children, and can be purchased at the Bordentown CDA office (located at 48 Dunns Mill Road in Bordentown) as well as at the door one hour before curtain.
